VANTAGE POINT

As an 11-year-old boy, in the late summer of 1962, I had a hankering to grab a glimpse of Cleveland’s Terminal Tower. Something about that structure intrigued me. A tall tree called out my name and I ascended it, affording me a good vantage point.

Understanding history and its lessons also requires a good vantage point, a spot from which to view the people, ideas, events, and thought processes of societies that have come and gone. Just as the present will shape our future, so the past has brought about the present.

A mastery of history can provide valuable lessons. Philosopher and novelist George Santayana (1863-1952) is famous for saying that “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”
