Young Mary Antin, delivered from the oppressive territory of Belarus and into the bustling city of Boston, quickly began to grasp the greatness of what she called, “My Country.” Having received virtually no education in her homeland, she marveled at all of the learning at her fingertips in the local public library.
In her voracious reading about America’s history, she encountered the venerable George Washington. She contemplated the story of America’s birth, the idea of individual liberty, and the courageous deeds of our founders. But with Washington she became particularly enamored, writing, “George Washington himself could not mean more than I when [he] said “my country,” after I had once felt it.
