NightWatch Podcast EPISODE 46: BUNGLED CHANCES PART 6 – THE FORT LAUDERDALE FIVE: 4-½ MIN.

THE FORT LAUDERDALE FIVE

In the late 1960’s, the “Charismatic Renewal” rolled out with a multitude of curious and thought-provoking components. Many of them were new and controversial. But first and foremost, the renewal came with the well-known, long-taught, non-controversial, easily-embraced, salvation message of the new birth. The controversial components of the renewal however raised a cacophony of commotion and discord within the body of Christ. Among the unexpected elements came the baptism of the Holy Spirit, speaking in tongues, a collection of spiritual giftings including healing powers, prophetic words, etc. The need for order and leadership became clear.

In the early 1970’s, the men who would later come to be known as “The Fort Lauderdale Five,” stepped up to the plate and offered to provide the needed leadership. Their intentions were pure and very genuine. They were not looking to build their own little kingdom. But unfortunately, their proposed remedy, their “shepherding system,” proved to be a disaster in the making, as many of those set in as pastors were anything but pastors. Many of these “shepherds” allowed their own egos and quests for power to take control of the ministry they had been given.
