NightWatch Podcast EPISODE 30: AMERICA’S STORY Part 14 – MADE OVER: 4 MIN.

PROMISED LAND

Two years following Annie Moore’s arrival in America, thirteen-year-old Jewish immigrant, Mary Antin, left her home in Belarus and arrived on our shores in 1894.

A century earlier, Catherine the Great, Empress of Russia (1762-1796), had forced all Jewish people living within Russia’s borders into the outlying Russian territories of Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, Ukraine and Belarus. This region came to be known as the “Jewish Pale,” a true Jewish ghetto on a large scale where Jews were overtaxed, highly regulated and greatly oppressed.

Not long after Mary’s escape to Boston from this horrid life, she began to fully drink in the spirit of America. Seventeen years after her arrival, she told the powerful story of her life in two worlds – her old tired, oppressed country of Belarus contrasted with what she came to call “My Country.” In her classic work, Promised Land, Mary tells of the wonders opened to her as an American woman.
