NightWatch Podcast EPISODE 43: BUNGLED CHANCES PART 3 – CHARISMATIC RENEWAL: 4-½ MIN.

TRUCKIN' FOR JESUS

I came to Christ in 1968 and am a product of the “Jesus Movement.” Although the movement itself finds its origins in southern California, our entire nation became impacted by the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Many of the “new-born” believers exited the hippie movement to become a part of the “Jesus Movement.” Some were drug users and, in some cases, homeless. Other “new-born,” “Jesus Movement” believers, like me, came out of the denominational churches. For the record, I was “born-again” in a Lutheran Church.

Chronologically speaking, the “Jesus Movement” followed the birth of what came to be the “Charismatic Renewal.” The “renewal” ball actually got rolling when, in Van Nuys California on a Sunday morning in 1959, Episcopal pastor, Father Dennis Bennett, announced from his pulpit that he had received the Baptism of the Holy Spirit accompanied by the gift of speaking in tongues.

Many of our parent’s generation, too, were likewise “born-again” in their denominational churches as the Holy Spirit did His work not only in the U.S., but across the globe.

Over time, the denominational “born-again” generations inspired by Father Dennis Bennett, and the California-born “Jesus Movement” came together, and the “Charismatic Renewal” swept the Christian Church in all of her forms and expressions.
